On December 22, 2019, the residence of Mr. Agezeh Sylvester Oghenero and Mrs. Agezeh Tuwere Queen in Sapele was violently attacked. The assault is believed to be a reaction to their active involvement in opposing early childhood marriage, a custom upheld by powerful and wealthy locals.

The couple, through their NGO, FEJIRO INITIATIVE, has been vocal against this tradition, advocating for the rights of young people and supporting those with diverse sexual orientations, which are considered taboo in the area. Despite repeated warnings and several detentions by local police, the couple persisted in their advocacy.

The attack left their house on Esiri Street destroyed and Mrs. Agezeh Tuwere Queen seriously injured. The couple had been previously reported to community chiefs and faced ongoing threats due to their stance against early childhood marriage. The Governmental Institutions in Nigeria are therefore called upon to arrest and nip in the bud this barbaric, archaic and mudane traditions and customs capable of threatening human life and their existence.
