Bisexual Man Arrested in Agbor, Delta State, Names Alleged Partner Who Is Now on the Run

A man identified as Kayode Babatunde Popoola was arrested by police in Delta State On October 21st, 2023, in connection with a crackdown on same-sex relationships, this arrest was made during same sex wedding ceremony in Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria, authorities confirmed earlier this week. During interrogation, Mr. Kayode, who reportedly identified as bisexual, disclosed the name of his alleged partner, one Mr. Temitope Abraham Oladejo.
Following the revelation, police have launched an active search for Temitope Oladejo, who has since gone into hiding. Law enforcement sources say efforts are ongoing to locate him, describing him as “wanted in connection with a same-sex relationship under investigation.” Efforts by the Nigerian Police to apprehend him at his residence and workplace in Ondo city, Ondo State have so far been unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
The arrest is believed to be part of a broader effort by local police to enforce Nigeria’s controversial Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, signed into law in 2014. The legislation criminalizes not only same-sex marriages but also public displays of affection between same-sex individuals and membership in LGBTQ+ organizations.
Mr. Kayode Popoola was reportedly detained during a routine police patrol and later brought in for questioning. It was during this interrogation that he is said to have revealed Mr. Temitope’s identity and their alleged relationship. At the time of writing, Mr. Temitope’s whereabouts remain unknown.
