R. Madrid defeats Sevilla to lift 2016 UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid has claimed 2016 UEFA Super Cup after defeating 10-man Sevilla by 3 goals to 2 in 120 minutes match.

Madrid claimed the UEFA Super Cup title after Dani Carvajal scored late in 119 minutes of extra time to defeat Sevilla 3-2.

The full-back struck with a penalty shootout looming, running from near halfway before drilling the ball past Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico with the outside of his right foot to earn Madrid a dramatic 3-2 win in Trondheim, Norway.

Madrid were trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes when skipper Sergio Ramos headed them level, and Carvajal made the most of their escape.

Madrid, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Toni Kruse and Pepe started with Karim Benzema and Luka Modric on the bench, were quickly out of the blocks in the all-Spanish encounter with wide-man Asensio prominent in the early stages.

Real Madrid had in June won UEFA Champions league to qualify for the Super Cup, while Sevilla qualified when defeated Liverpool Football Club of England in UEFA Cup also in June.
