ASUU will end strike next week-Education Minister

MINISTER of Education, Adamu Adamu, has said the on-going strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) would be called off next week.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja when he appeared before the Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, led Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, the minister disclosed that executive arm of government has commenced plans to ensure that it honours the agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator commended the Minister for efforts made by his ministry so far towards ensuring that the situation is resolved and the strike action called off.
ASUU had on Sunday, August 13 commenced a total and comprehensive indefinite strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill the 2009 agreement made with the union.
Speaking after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council held at the University of Abuja on Monday, ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the industrial action began Sunday, August 13.
Since commencement of the strike on Monday, there have been no teaching in many universities in the country.
Among the issues ASUU has raised this time are the 2009 agreement and 2013 MOU are; funding for the revitalization of public universities; earned academic allowances; registration of Nigerian universities pension management company and pension matters; university staff school, fractionalisation and non payment of salaries among others.
